CORRUPTION: See what Ribadu said about Obasanjo's regime

Obasanjo’s eight years worse than Abacha’s – Ribadu

Pioneer chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu allegedly described corruption under President Olusegun Obasanjo as worse than that of late General Sani Abacha, according to United States cable obtained by Wikileaks.
The report released by Wikileaks stated that a meeting which the former US Ambassador to Nigeria, Robin Sanders had with Mallam Ribadu to discuss his removal from the EFCC, Ribadu told the US ambassador that Obasanjo was good at covering his tracks while admitting that corruption was worse under Obasanjo. Ribadu was quoted as saying that former President Obasanjo knew how to play the game. “Although he created the EFCC and understood its importance for him with the international community, Ribadu explained, that by far and even more than the Abacha days, corruption under Obasanjo’s eight years was far worse.
See extracts of the cable below:
Classified by Ambassador Robin Sanders for Reasons 1.4 (b, c, & d).
1. (S) Summary: Ambassador had 4-hour private discussion with Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Chairman (EFCC) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu on the evening of December 28 at her residence to hear his views on the recent announcement that he will be transferred from the EFCC to the country’s leadership school, the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS). Ribadu took the opportunity to cover not only the politics behind this move, but also spent several hours discussing a range of EFCC pending cases that he wanted to share, including his personal views on Yar’Adua, former President Obasanjo, recently indicted former Delta State Governor Ibori, and the illicit enrichment open cases on the Police Inspector General Mike Okiro and Attorney General Aondoakaa.a

It seemed that he wanted someone outside of the EFCC to know the details of active investigations as a possible failsafe given the current negative political climate surrounding his pending transfer.
Ribadu also said he planned to show up to his office on December 31, 2007, as usual and would continue to do so )- unless he was physically blocked — until the effective date of his transfer (February 2008). Ribadu said, without a doubt, yes, the warrant on Ibori was the seminal action that made Yar’Adua support the transfer.
He added that he was worried that Yar’Adua was not strong enough to balance the pressures on him from his inner circle — many he had already blocked from illicit enrichment The Ambassador expressed to him the U.S.’s strong concerns over the tenor of events and how unsettling this is given what appears to be a reversal of Yar’Adua’s strong anti-corruption messages while in Washington. Coming on the heels of the U.S. visit, this action has hurt our initial sense of his commitment on these key democracy pillars. The EFCC Chair was pleased to hear of the international interest in the situation and added that anything is still possible in terms of a reversal as Yar’Adua tends to respond to the last person who speaks with him. He thought pressure from the international community could be useful. Ribadu said if the transfer prevails then his Lagos deputy, Lamorde, would likely be brought up to serve as Acting. He then praised the USG training provided by Treasury’s FinCen, and said whether he was at the EFCC or not, the USG should continue its efforts to help as his team was dedicated and committed. Ribadu said that the EFCC needed a few more concrete tools such as a Crime Center, housing a data base on all criminal activity, and hoped the U.S. would help on this.
Ambassador provided the EFCC Chair with all her contact information, noted she had a pending weekend response call from the President, and told him that he had active supporters who would be following this issue, notwithstanding the Ambassador.
2. (S) Following Yar’Adua’s positive U.S. trip, fairly upbeat sentiments by Nigerians at year’s end on his tenure, and his own end of year national address calling on adherence to transparency, not only do we need to be concerned about this action, but also what appears to be other steps against the EFCC. Even if Ribadu is gone or if ours or other efforts prevail, there are potentially other possible actions on the horizon to reduce the EFCC’s prowess by such as removing others on Ribadu’s team, and merging it with other less focused and effective entities such as the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC). Whatever his motives, Yar’Adua has made a major political misstep as his tribunal results loom near. End Summary

Read what Boko Haram told Obasanjo when he attempted to mediate

Former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, has revealed new facts about Boko Haram, its founder and the insurgents. Obasanjo spoke to eNCA’s Raphael Ambasu in Kenya last week when he launched his memoir, My Watch. When asked why his efforts fell short despite being part of the negotiating team, Obasanjo said, ” I wasn’t negotiating on behalf of anybody. I decided to find out facts on my own. After the Boko Haram attacked the UN house in Abuja, I thought it was getting too far, I wanted to know if there is an organization, and if there is an organization, what is its objective? Are they organized? Do they have leaders? What are their grievances? Are they ready to talk and all that, which I took up on my own. “I spoke to the president and said “look can I do this on my own?”, he said “look you can go and do it” and I thank him and I went. In fact he said he would give me a plane to go around. I said “look I don’t want a plane to go around because if I take a government plane to go around, I become a government agent and that would be suspect. No I don’t want the government to give it, so I did it on my own. The find, Yes, there is an organization, they have leaders, they have objectives, Sharia is their objective and Sharia law is not a

“You see how they came about Boko Haram, that’s not the name they give themselves but their leader before he was killed in cold blood by the police. Mohammed Yusuf called in graduates that were with him and said “look bring your certificates, one who has first class, one who has second class, upper second class, lower and all that and one who has masters, so okay with your certificates can you use them to feed yourself? if you cannot use it to feed yourself, of what use is it?” So that’s where they got that appellation Boko Haram. Do they want to talk? At that time they wanted to talk, they even said they will talk not in Africa and I said to their proxy but look this is an African problem, it will be solved on African soil. Do they have leaders? yes they have leaders. So all things that I found out are reported faithfully to the authority.”Obasanjo and Boko Haram

Obasanjo tears his PDP membership card

Obasanjo is said to have torn the card just a day after he accused President Goodluck Jonathan of plotting to frustrate the conduct of the upcoming general elections.
Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has reportedly ripped apart his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) membership card.
One of Nigeria's biggest publications, Punch Newspaperpublished the report today, February 16, 2015, promising to give details on the said incident.
This latest incident occurs just days after Obasanjo accused President Goodluck Jonathan of plotting to frustrate the conduct of the March and April general elections.
The former President also stated that Jonathan, who is of the PDP, was afraid that he would be jailed by All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Muhammadu Buhari if the latter were to win the elections.
Obasanjo has also accused the President of squandering Nigeria's oil savings and in his controversial autobiography described Jonathan as callous and selfish.
The former President also recently threw his weight behind Buhari's presidential ambition, stating that he has every reason to support the APC candidate.
Obasanjo had earlier stated that he would always be a member of the PDP regardless of his criticisms of Jonathan and his administration.
Details of where and why Obasanjo tore the card are however still sketchy.

READ WHAT BUHARI SAID ABOUT SHARIA IN 2011

    Hearsay or He said:

A former military ruler and the All progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, in 2011, called for the introduction of 'total' Islamic law across the country, reports said.

Buhari, who ruled Nigeria from a coup in December 1983 to his ouster in 1985, told a seminar in Kaduna, northern Nigeria, at the weekend of first week of March of that year that the strict Islamic law code known as the Sharia should be introduced in full across Nigeria.

"I will continue to show openly and inside me the total commitment to the Sharia movement that is sweeping all over Nigeria," Buhari said, quoted in press reports.

"God willing, we will not stop the agitation for the total implementation of the Sharia in the country," Buhari said.

Northern Nigeria is mainly Muslim but southern Nigeria is mainly Christian and has led criticism of the introduction of Islamic law in a dozen northern states in the past 18 months.

Africa's most populous country has been shaken repeatedly in the past by religious unrest. In February 2000 between 2 000 and 3 000 people were killed by Christian-Muslim riots in Kaduna over the introduction of Sharia.

Call for Sharia across the country

Buhari's comments were interpreted by the southern-based papers as a call for the imposition of Sharia all across the country, even in the mainly Christian south.

"Buhari calls for Sharia in all states," was the headline of the respected newspaper The Guardian.

Buhari's comments were defended by supporters as simply a call for the full implementation of Sharia in areas where Muslims predominated.

But the comments are the second by Buhari that have courted controversy after he called earlier this year for Muslims to vote at the next presidential elections only for someone who would defend their faith.

This was criticised by the press as a call for voting along religious lines, as well as an attack on the current president, Olusegun Obasanjo, who is a Christian.

Buhari made the latest comments at a seminar organised by the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria, a newly set up body attended by northern state governments and Islamic scholars.

"It is a legal responsibility which God has given us, within the context of one Nigeria, to continue to uphold the practice of Sharia wholeheartedly , and to educate non-Muslims that they have nothing to fear," he said.

"What remains for Muslims in Nigeria is for them to redouble their efforts, educate Muslims on the need to promote the full implementation of Sharia law," he went on. - AFP

Excerpts From Jonathan's Media Chat Wednesday

“IF I LOSE, I WILL HAND OVER TO A NEW GOVT”

President Jonathan addressed pertinent issues during the media chat on Wednesday night. On Handing over if he loses, he said contrary to some, he would handover to a new government if he loses. He also said APC started aggressive campaigning long before PDP..He also said most of the things said on Social media are distorted and not factual..He cited the viral reports that INEC chairman would be fired ..He said it was totally untrue.

He also said though it is not wise to negotiate with terrorists, he would be prepared to do anything to save lives..even those of Boko Haram members who die..But he said Boko Haram are faceless with so many commanders..There is no single head to negotiate with..That explains the failed negotiations in 2014..He noted that as the Vice President back then,he visited militants in Warri without carrying weapons but it would be impossible to do that with Boko Haram.

On Chibok girls, he expressed optimism that they would be rescued alive..but stated that even in normal kidnappings, some hostages lose their lives ,as well as kidnappers..So he can't say with certainty .He also noted that the girls are being moved around in the forest prone to snakes and other dangers ..But he said with the new coalition with other countries, the fight is stronger ..

When asked to give an assessment of Buhari, he frowned at the question..Saying his assessment wouldn't be fair to Nigerians and said the journalist was unfair for asking such a question .
